New U.S. National Park Preserves ‘Land of Standing-Up Rocks’ and its Apache Culture in Arizona

The U.S. has designated a new National Park in Arizona, preserving the distinctive landscape known as Chiricahua, the land of ‘Standing-Up Rocks’.

Previously a national monument, the new Chiricahua National Park recognizes the area’s rich Apache heritage with its remarkable rock spires and natural biodiversity.

A hidden gem in the southeastern corner of The Grand Canyon State, the park protects a landscape of towering rhyolite rock spires and balanced rocks formed by an ancient volcanic eruption roughly 27 million years ago.

Known for its spectacular hiking and climbing in the Chiricahua Mountains—where desert, grassland, and forest ecosystems meet—the spot also attracts stargazers.

First protected as a national monument in 1924, Chiricahua preserves thousands of years of human history, including its importance as the homeland of the Chiricahua Apache and its legacy of early homesteading families at Faraway Ranch.

Located 90 miles east of Tucson (halfway to Las Cruces, New Mexico), the park also offers camping, scenic drives, and wildlife viewing across the 12,000 acres in Sulphur Springs Valley.

The Arizona congressional delegation in Washington, DC, had first introduced the bill to make the monument a national park in 2020—and officials finally cut the ribbon this month. Visitors can find current information about the park at NPS.gov/chir.
